Oriental mood

From simple inspirations arising from travels in Japan, to the desire to delve deeper into the Japanese lifestyle. An oriental spirit for the design of sofas

Craftsmanship, essential design and sophisticated manufacture are the key points shared by these upholstered creations that express the ideals of an oriental aesthetic, where empty zones are just as important as full parts, where technology respects tradition and natural materials exist in harmony with modern production processes.

Daiki by Minotti, Design Marcio Kogan

The Daiki chair by Minotti comes precisely from the deep passion of Japan of its creator, the Brazilian designer Marcio Kogan of Studio MK27. A tribute to Japanese décor and its design, the chair has a deep seat (with or without armrests) and a footrest, made with sophisticated woodworking to generate a curved shell composed of two elements joined at 45°, with an angle for the back that guarantees exceptional comfort.

Horizontal Sofa ēdition by DePadova, Design Ryutaro Yoshida

The Horizontal Sofa ēdition, from the Time & Style ēdition collection developed for De Padova by Ryutaro Yoshida, is a system of sofa components with juxtaposed modules, featuring a base with molded aluminium feet and a frame in extruded aluminium. Its horizontal shape “is in tune with the Japanese lifestyle, with its smaller living spaces with respect to those of Europe.” The project, entirely Made in Italy, is composed of upholstered units for two or three seats, or corner models, with a chaise longue, a pouf and other complements.

Curry by Porro, Design Piero Lissoni

Curry by Porro, Design Piero Lissoni

Piero Lissoni for Porro confirms the trend with his Curry sofa, whose geometric matrix presents a trapezoidal form inspired by the orient, in a structure of black-stained ash wood that becomes the frame for a back in woven straw, coated in black. A perfect blend of design and crafts.

More Japanese overtones are seen in the Sengu Sofa by Patricia Urquiola for Cassina. The structure is composed of a steel frame with belting, elegantly finished with two beams in Canaletto walnut or oak. The soft padding has rigorous quilting for a forceful graphic effect. The contemporary spirit of the Sengu Sofa is also visible in its construction and its fine materials, such as 100% recycled fiber obtained from PET, mostly recovered from the oceans, introduced in the filling of the cushions as part of a sustainable perspective.

IFDM meets the Paris interior style makers – Chapter 4: Guillaume Rolland/Christian Liaigre
