Designer sanctuaries

More than just armchairs, these are contemporary nests designed to embrace, cocoon, and offer a retreat from the noise of the world

Enveloping, protective, suspended, or shell-like: some design icons seem to spring from an idea as ancient as it is instinctive – the nest. These are armchairs and seats that do more than just accommodate the body; they create an intimate space in which to retreat, relax, and feel protected.

The Egg chair (on cover) was designed by Arne Jacobsen for Fritz Hansen in 1958 to furnish his masterpiece: the SAS Royal Hotel in Copenhagen (now the Radisson Collection Royal Hotel). Compact and enveloping, its shell is made of a synthetic material, padded with polyurethane foam, and upholstered in a vast range of fabrics (reorganized this year into 24 coordinated options) or leather. The star-shaped aluminum base is mounted on a satin-polished steel pedestal.

Made of fiberglass and upholstered in high-quality fabric or leather, it is available in 14 colors. Featured in the collections of design museums worldwide, the seat has appeared in films, music videos, and on magazine covers.

With its welcoming, protective, and organic structure, Nestrest, created for Dedon by Fred Frety and Daniel Pouzet, transforms the classic garden sofa into a small architectural element: a secluded, suspended sanctuary that cradles and envelops you like a warm embrace. It is the ideal place to relax, meditate, and converse in the open air. The design draws inspiration from the shapes, textures, and colors of nature, as well as from the sophisticated structure of certain birds’ nests.
