V&A East, where music, space and memory meet

Opened recently in Stratford, the V&A East Museum and Storehouse redefine the V&A’s axis towards East London, in an urban context undergoing rapid transformation. During Clerkenwell Design Week 2026, The Music is Black: A British Story stands out as one of the key moments for those interested in design and visual culture

More than an extension of the historic South Kensington museum, V&A East Museum signals a shift in direction for the Victoria and Albert Museum – a new cultural hub rooted in Stratford, at the heart of the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, and a redefinition of how the institution engages with the contemporary city. The V&A East Museum, inaugurated in April 2026, marks the new focal point of the V&A’s presence in East London. Alongside the earlier V&A East Storehouse, the project establishes a layered cultural system that forms a distributed network of spaces, designed to be more accessible, porous, and closely connected to the area’s creative communities.

The architecture is by O’Donnell + Tuomey, who conceived the building as something closer to an urban sequence than a conventional museum. Multiple entrances, integrated public areas and a continuous vertical circulation turn the visit into a spatial journey, where movement and architecture are tightly interwoven. Inside, the permanent Why We Make galleries, developed by JA Projects in collaboration with the V&A East Youth Collective, offer a non-linear reading of the collection. Objects, narratives and perspectives are brought into dialogue through contemporary themes, reflecting a clear intention: positioning the museum as a site of co-creation rather than simple display.

During Clerkenwell Design Week 2026, V&A East Museum and The Music is Black: A British Story emerge as key cultural highlights beyond the main design routes. The project traces the influence of Black British music from 1900 to the present day through archival material, photography, fashion, sound installations and personal objects belonging to artists including Little Simz, JME and Joan Armatrading. Spatially and visually, the exhibition is shaped by Reality is__, a London-based studio founded by Italian architect Carola Migliore and British designer Miles Wagner.

Spatially and visually, the exhibition is shaped by Reality is__, a London-based studio founded by Italian architect Carola Migliore and British designer Miles Wagner. Their practice operates at the intersection of architecture, scenography and immersive installation, with a strong focus on the relationship between space, perception and emotional engagement. For V&A East, the studio developed the exhibition and graphic design, translating rhythm, vibration and sonic memory into a physical and spatial language.

Rather than a conventional scenography, the result is a constructed perceptual sequence, where light, sound and atmospheric shifts guide the visitor through the experience.
It becomes an environment that visitors do not simply observe but physically move through. Next to the museum, V&A East Storehouse rethinks the idea of the archive altogether. Rather than a hidden storage facility, it operates as a working museum space open to the public, where conservation and behind-the-scenes processes become part of the experience. The vast Weston Collections Hall, crossed by metal walkways and transparent surfaces, reveals the operational life of the collection and turns it into content in its own right. With this dual opening, V&A East establishes a new cultural model for London: less institutional, more porous, where architecture, curation and experiential design come together to form a museum that does not simply present culture, but actively puts it into motion.
