Projects from the North

A new worldwide initiative debuts in New York: the Scandinavian Design Embassy. This traveling promotional platform brings together Finland, Sweden, and Norway

During NYCxDesign, the Scandinavian Design Embassy will officially debut, inserting itself in an original way into the international design scene. A collaboration between the Nordic nations, this project aims to strengthen the global presence of Scandinavian creativity and products by hosting events in embassies and consular residences around the world.

Based on the core values of Northern Europe – innovation, sustainability, and design excellence – the Scandinavian Design Embassy evolves from the Finnish Design Embassy, which has been active since 2022. Now, it expands to include Sweden and Norway, creating a unified platform for design diplomacy. «The Nordic countries have decided to join forces in the area of design export», says Ilkka Suppanen, creative director of the Finnish Design Embassy. «Through this partnership, we celebrate the principles that define our design approach».

Since the 1950s, Scandinavian design has been defined by its simplicity, functionality, and democratic nature. Even today, these values deeply influence global design narratives. “Scandinavian design is a strong and recognizable international brand,” emphasizes Caline Heiroth of Svensk Form, the Swedish Society of Crafts and Design.

The Scandinavian Design Embassy provides a strategic showcase for small and medium-sized Nordic companies, facilitating their access to global markets and encouraging the exchange of expertise. «Companies can learn a lot from each other when entering new markets», says Ragnhild Grytten of the Norwegian Design Industry.
