A dreamer to generate new energy

Jaime Hayon combats boredom at the art’otel London Battersea Power Station, with a dreamy personal vision, ironic and irreverent, to blur the boundaries between art and design

Listed by the magazine Wallpaper as one of the most influential creators of the last decade, defined as a visionary by Time Magazine, Jaime Hayon brings his bold and amusing flair to art’otel London Battersea Power Station, offering a unique experience. “I wanted to create a journey for guests and bring a completely new hotel experience to London, one that blends great comfort with a new vision of contemporary creativity. It’s been a true honor to work on this project,” the Spanish designer says.

Already at the entrance, a volume of almost 3 meters in height, one senses the theatrical atmosphere inside, especially in the shared spaces. More precisely, the atmosphere is that of a backstage situation, where actors and sets are not yet playing their respective roles, and can thus be swapped without distinction. The force comes from color, with pastels and deep tones, and a playful taste for expression that blurs the boundaries between art and design, reflecting the future of a district, Battersea, destined to become a new cultural hub for the capital city.

The lobby is like a chamber of curiosities. The curved reception counter is in aqua lacquer, with an unspecified number of meticulously selected objects, from eclectic vases to vintage glassware. A series of metaphysical and fairytale images by the duo KlunderBie has been specially commissioned by Hayon. The artistic and creative component has a place of honor nearly everywhere, transforming every space into a sort of art gallery.

The restaurant has been conceived as a circular room in which tapestries, made to measure in the Netherlands with recycled yarns, are suspended in the air, setting the rhythm of the space. A bit further on, gazing upward, we see a red sculptural piece that pays homage to Alexander Calder with its kinetic energy and vibrant forms. The guestrooms also contain personalized artworks on the walls, with a sumptuous mixture of design furniture created by Hayon.
