The lively energy of Madrid, incorporated in the understated refinement of the design of Ian Schrager. This is the combination behind The Madrid Edition, the second destination of the Marriott International chain in Spain after the facility opened in Barcelona. Located in the urban center at Plaza de la Descalzas and facing a monastery from the 16th century, The Madrid Edition has been formulated as a “luxury urban resort” in keeping with the vision of the British architect John Pawson and the Parisian designer François Champsaur who have done the interiors, under the supervision of Ian Schrager Company.

It is located inside a modern building with a Baroque portal on the façade, created by the Spanish architect Pedro de Ribera. Inside, a sculptural spiral staircase framed by oak walls creates a chiaroscuro effect, a dialogue between light and shadow that becomes the leitmotif of the entire project. From here one enters the atrium and the Lobby Bar furnished by Cassina Custom Interiors, the contract division of the company, which has produced custom furnishings for the various public areas of the hotel.

In the large Lobby Bar convivial islands rely on encounters of opposing materials: backlit shelves (in natural oak) form the backdrop for theatrical U-shaped sofas. Also in the successive shared areas, the precious range of materials staged by Cassina Custom Interiors sets the rhythm of the spaces.
In the Jerónimo restaurant, for example, chairs and benches upholstered with yellow leather are combined with three types of tables developed by the company: the tops are in white Arabescato marble, Grand Antique marble or rattan.

At the Oroya restaurant on the fourth floor, the gaze is captured by a large custom-made oak table from Cassina Custom Interiors, crossing the center of the space; here Cassina has explored unexpected materials, like the glazed volcanic stone utilized for the table tops, with a particular crackle effect.

Heading outside onto the terrace, give gazebos with a height of two meters, produced by Cassina Custom Interiors in solid iroko wood, offer a unique view of the red rooftops of Madrid, right next to the city’s biggest rooftop pool. The slanting boards of the gazebos (with built-in USB ports) screen the sun’s rays without completely blocking the light, while the curtains in outdoor fabric can be closed for greater privacy.

For the Punch Room, a series of loose items by Cassina create a relaxing atmosphere for tea, or for drinks in the evening. From the welcoming C-shaped sofa with capitonné work covered in green velvet, to the armchairs in black leather and the ottomans in pony skin, arranged comfortably around the tables with tops in solid walnut.
