Ouverture and Dezza: the icons of Poltrona Frau

Two new editions to celebrate the elegance and timeless quality of Poltrona Frau and its collections for the living area

Ouverture by Poltrona Frau, design Pierluigi Cerri

A culture of production that brings out the value of materials and interprets new trends. A timeless elegance that is a synonym for quality and a distinctive signature for pieces that have become true icons. This is the philosophy of Poltrona Frau, which with the new interpretations of the Ouverture sofa and the Dezza armchair demonstrates a perfect balance between the desire to update and the focus on the company’s own particular history.

Designed by Pierluigi Cerri in 1982, Ouverture fully embodies the brand’s fine craftsmanship, enhanced by the ability to work with different materials – from leather to metals, fabrics to stones – without compromising their nature. Thanks to painstaking aesthetic research and a balance between high-tech and crafts, the sofa is an extremely versatile creation, ready to adapt to a wide range of contexts and styles. Available with two seats, two larger seats and a three-seat version, this model references industrial architecture by means of the T-beam on which it stands, embellished with soft cushions in Pelle Frau or fabric.

In the new reinterpretation, the metal parts have been coated with epoxy powder in matte black, while the cushions have been ergonomically corrected in their padding. What remains are the typical design stylemes of the 1980s, like the buttons that decorate the back and the slight tapering in the interlock between the seat and back cushions. Great attention has been lavished on the details, from the internal steel plates covered in jacquard fabric and leather, to the padding of the cushions in goosedown and polyester wadding, for a sensation of total comfort.

Still with the outlook of recognition of value and reinterpretation in a contemporary approach, the Dezza chair has also been given a new guise, now available in a variant that becomes an integral part of the 2023 Pleasure Collection. The historic icon designed by Gio Ponti, formulated in three different versions (with a high back and slender armrests, as an armchair or a two-seat settee), has been reissued with the new Redevance covering, a pattern that decorates a wool satin fabric of Ponti’s own design, the result of collaboration between Archivio Gio Ponti and the art weaving firm JSA. The motif reflects the experimentation on modular design, evoking geometric elements, circular sequences on a pale background, enhanced by alternating shades of blue and gray to create an appealing final effect that responds to modern tastes.

The seat is comfortable and functional, the silhouette soft and trim, made in cured beech with polyurethane foam filler. The ensemble of parts generates an ode to functional design, without sacrificing extreme aesthetic refinement.
