Maison Matisse: a tribute to an artist in contemporary design

From the Les Mille et Une Nuits and Fold collections created by Formafantasma, to the new boutique in Paris, color and poetry inspired by Henri Matisse

A place to keep the aesthetic language of Henri Matisse alive. A creative hotbed where forms, colors and compositions take their cue from the vision of the great artist, to be reinterpreted in contemporary through the creations of renowned and emerging talents. This is the background of the French brand Maison Matisse, which reveals a new aspect of the art-design dichotomy, thanks to a “three-dimensional” interpretation of his iconic paintings.

Prestigious objects, lighting and décor complements, and much more: opening to a varied range of colorful proposals, the Maison transmits the essence of the painter, his joyful philosophy, through skillful use of cutting-edge techniques and refined artisanal workmanship.

The chromatic and dream-like aspects of the lines are also clearly perceptible in the latest creations, such as the line of decorative objects Les Mille et Une Nuits, formulated by Formafantasma for the permanent collection, composed of two one-offs that rely on a palette of five bright hues, referencing the work of art of the same title and reflecting its artistic and intuitive approach.

Through research leading to a reinterpretation of the artist in a contemporary spirit, the Aube candle holder and centerpiece come to life in steel and aluminium. Two pieces with essential lines in which color is the true protagonist, in items produced with machinery at the highest levels of technical prowess.

The collaboration with the Milan-based duo has also led, in parallel, to the temporary collection of Fold lamps, pieces of great aesthetic impact inspired by the decoupage works of Matisse.

Following in the painter’s footsteps, the designers have created abstract models, starting with the use of paper and then channeled into chandeliers, table lamps, candle holders, centerpieces and suspension lamps in metal with paper shades, one-offs that embody the essence of balance while bursting with creativity.

This year, to bring out the value of every single object, Maison Matisse has opened its first boutique in Paris during Maison&Objet, in the heart of the Rive Gauche and the design district. An intimate, elegant space, like a canvas from which to glean surprising details of great emotional force.
