The true spirit of Sicily in the Dolce&Gabbana home

The island with its unique traditions, panoramas and colors continues to provide inspiration for the furnishings line by the fashion duo: a tribute to joy and craftsmanship

Crystal blue water forms a contrast with lush greenery on the coasts, in a mixture of Mediterranean, ancient Greek and North African cultures, with influences from the Normans and Spain. An expression of love for Sicily and its heritage, formulated by Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana in their new line of products for the home.

The folk traditions of the island are the leitmotif of over 300 items in the collection of furniture and tableware, reflecting a festive, carefree and cheerful lifestyle in which craftsmanship goes together with innovation and research, for a cultural expression totally Made in Italy.

“We have rediscovered very ancient types of workmanship, together with Italian craftsmen – the fashion designers say – such as the blown glass of Murano, Sicilian pottery entirely painted by hand, the art of cabinetmaking, woven straw, inlays and carvings in wood, the age-old technique of murrines, the weaving of brocades and fine velvets on historic looms.”

The items for the home are organized in various specific themes: Leopardo, Zebra, Blu Mediterraneo and Carretto. The latter, based on the carts of local folklore, is one of the main creative themes for the collection.

Transformed from a means of transport into a popular identifying symbol, the cart sums up functionality and art in a fascinating transmission of stories through designs depicting episodes from history and literature. This type of painting, with its precise two-dimensional style and bright colors, without shadows or shadings (even on the wheels), returns in the Aurora and Atena tables with their minute details: from the visual balancing of the volumes to the shaping of the borders by hand, followed by careful polishing to bring out the appeal of the illustrations, conserving them in time. The Anemone sofa, on the other hand, has a squared structure that contains a deep seat, in an explosion of colors and geometries.

Not just furniture, but also tableware as ambassadors of warmth and welcome, again with the theme of the Sicilian cart. The Piatti Piani set in fine porcelain, composed of two pieces, features rich decorations applied with three-step firing on underglaze, for maximum uniformity of the surface. A technique that brings high resistance to scratching and wear.

Finally, there are the pieces in blown colored Murano glass, like the wine pitcher featuring the typical grooved rigadin pattern, and the red wine glass with balloton diamond texture, where the bowl, stem and foot form a dramatic color combination.
