Riflessi: technique, design, nature

The impeccable glow of mirror-finish steel. The charm of natural stones, with their unpredictable and sumptuous grain. An aesthetic short circuit for a refined image

The Treccani Italian encyclopedia, for the term ‘riflesso,’ defines this noun as light reflected by a shiny or propagating surface. The name Riflessi embodies this meaning, interpreted in many different objects and materials.

This mirror effect will be one of the focuses of the displays created for the upcoming Milano Design Week, by the designer Bruno Tarsia at the store in Milan at Piazza Velasca. Steel – which thanks to a nano-ceramic treatment becomes extremely resistant to wear and fingerprints, and also antibacterial and totally recyclable – will be utilized for the frames of the Diamond mirrors, part of the new collection, which is simultaneously linear and dramatic. Geometric games capture light and spread it, like a big crystal.

The steel will be deployed with the special ‘folding’ technique, also to make the basis of some of the pieces already included in the catalogue, like the Shangai table with its unmistakable design. Here the luminosity of the material has an effect of greater lightness, in visual terms. The object becomes a pure line.

The idea of the mirror immediately suggests the matter of the double. Riflessi addresses this concept by staging a fascinating dualism: while on the one hand the accent is on the clean precision of a type of steel that offers special performance, on the other the emphasis is on the precious, sumptuous, timeless essence of marble. An intriguing game of contrasts, in a space dominated by brightness, highlighting the grain, the colors and shadings of natural stones offered for the tops of large and small tables, as well as the sideboards: Patagonia, Capraia Lucido, Verde Alpi, matte Verde Borgogna and Rosso Levanto marble.

For all these reasons, the title chosen for this special display is Surfaces. In the end, the surfaces set the boundaries of an object, but also narrate its identity. They communicate characteristics, personality and value. After all, “only the shallow know themselves,” Oscar Wilde wrote. As usual, he was trying to surprise his listeners. But he also prompted them to ‘reflect.’
