The first time for Design Miami / Podium x Shanghai

First edition for an event that puts design as an art form at its center, showing works of contemporary creativity together with rare 20th-century pieces. The objective? To combine the great history of Asian design with an overview of emerging talent

From 4 to 14 November, Design Miami heads to Asia for the first time, during Shanghai Art Week. Curated by Aric Chen and Violet Ruhui Wang, Design Miami / Podium x Shanghai is an initiative that explores design as an art form and presents contemporary works along with 20th-century rarities. The objective? To draw on the historic relationship between China and fine objects, suggesting new interpretations in a global context, bringing together the remarkable history of Asian design with a focus on emerging talent.

The event takes a hybrid format, where all the works displayed on the show floor can also be purchased online at designmiami.com. Starting on 6 November 2021, online visitors will have access to an exciting program of conferences on digital design and 3D virtual tours.

Arriving for its debut in China, the program of Design Miami/ Podium x Shanghai, in collaboration with Made In House, focuses on the theme “Wu Gan: The Art of Design,” a concept with which to describe the sensorial, emotional and spiritual correlations between the inner world of the individual and the outer world of objects and spaces, underscoring narratives and meanings, roles and processes, lineages and ideologies of design.

With the aim of following the red thread of the exhibition, bringing out the connection between objects, environments and aesthetic, emotional and spiritual experiences, the Italian company Poliform, the partner of the event, will take part in Design Miami / Podium x Shanghai with an installation on the photography project “Time, Light, Space”: an exclusive work created by the photographer Paolo Roversi as a voyage in design and in the history of this Italian furniture and design company.

The Exhibition Hall, which will host the Design Talks, will be entirely furnished with Poliform products, like the iconic Mad and Mad Queen chairs by Marcel Wanders Studio, and the new Saint-Germain sofa and Orbit tables by Jean-Marie Massaud.

The appointment with Design Miami / Podium x Shanghai is in the spaces of the former British consulate in Shanghai, at the historic Bund, No. 1 Wai Tan Yuan.
