“Turn on a light, and everything seems visible. Turn on a Karman light and everything seems different, magical.” Few words are needed to narrate this company, and to understand the philosophy behind its creations. This all-Italian business, founded in 2005 at Fossombrone, in the Marches, has given unique, unconventional meaning to the concept of “decorative use of light,” perfectly balanced between the functional purpose of lighting and an approach of remarkable expressive originality, made of experimentation with materials, stylistic daring and avoidance of stereotypes. A sense of enchantment that wraps spaces and captures the gaze. We are catapulted into a world where ceramic animals glow with life; where everyday objects find a new, luminous existence; where archetypal forms are reinterpreted to offer a new vision of themselves and their surroundings.

Even classicism is called into question, amalgamated with contemporary canons; decorativism breaks out of its boundaries to embrace architectural impact. This is what happens with Moonbloom, the new system of suspension and ceiling lamps designed by Matteo Ugolini. From a large Baroque plate in white plaster with floral motifs, a slim cable is suspended bearing one or two black aluminium cones at its end; the union of these stylistic extremes generates an architectural suspension that can exist individually or in compositions, discreetly inserted in the setting to the point of going (almost) unobserved. The plate can be coated in different colors, transformed as an expressive effect.
And if “a different alchemy accompanies Karman every time in the invention of new sculptures of light,” as Davide Diamantini, CEO of Karman explains, then Circus opens up a new design chapter, thanks to the contaminations that bring it to life. This line of three suspension lamps in blown glass, created by Matteo Ugolini and Edmondo Testaguzza, displays a “woven” white filigree that triggers magical lighting effects. To achieve this, the designers have applied an age-old technique dating back to the 16th century, which calls for the wrapping and extension of strips of white milk glass on the surface of molten glass prior to blowing.
The results are soft bands of contrasting patterns that surprisingly suggest circus tents, leading to the name of the collection. Every Circus item is thus unique one of a kind, offered in three models of different sizes, to create original compositions.
To be, to amaze, to create. To experiment, to risk, to innovate. This is the vocabulary of Karman, to reveal a vision of the world in a new light.
