With Gracefulness from Dejvice: a series of encounters

In one of the liveliest residential districts of Prague, No Architects rethinks the 100 square meters of a dwelling, replicating the elegance of the host building in a narrative of continuity

The enclosure containing the renovation project is that of an old building in Dejvice, one of the trendiest zones of Prague, dating back to 1920 and still representative of an overall urban approach outlined by the architect Antonín Engel. The building conserves its historical image on the outside, while inside the layout has been freed from the original ‘separatist’ logic that called for a series of rooms, grouped along one wall and connected by a dark corridor.

The new residential project With Gracefulness from Dejvice, created by the Czech studio No Architects, utilizes the 16-meter straightaway to insert the rooms in a fluid, lighter sequence, with the living area at the center and two bedrooms on opposite sides. The kitchen and living areas communicate thanks to a new large opening, framed by a beveled border clad in oak, and leading at the side to the antechamber with dressing room and a private bathroom.

The visual harmony and scheme of relations incorporate all the rooms, from the most sociable to the most private, sharing in a narrative constructed by means of chromatic homogeneity, the availability of natural light and a series of details that link to the elegant, optimistic character of the building. The motifs on the radiator covers, for example, mimic the designs on the building’s staircase, while the pointed doorjambs reference the borders around the windows.

The white plaster and herringbone wood flooring extend along the entire apartment, joining ceilings and floors in a chromatic alliance that becomes the backdrop against which to place minimalist, super-functional furnishings, with limited incursions of chromatic flair. These include the beds, the bookcases, the full-height custom cabinets, the dining table, sofas and seating zone, which can be extended when necessary thanks to a mattress that is otherwise hidden under the bookcase.

No Architects has also inserted some more iconic presences. In the sophisticated game of balance of materials and tones, they have – with Gracefulness, of course – added the Bolia chairs designed by Henrik S. Thomsen, and the Blimp lamps by Bomma which seem to float, like transparent clouds, brightening the living area.
