Caimi Brevetti unveils Open Lab

Seven laboratories for research on acoustics, at the headquarters of Caimi Brevetti. The company has created Open Lab, a unique, futuristic project also open to universities and research institutes

Seven laboratories, 40 kilometers of electrical and data cables, 270 tons of concrete for two acoustic chambers. Impressive numbers that provide only a partial idea of what’s inside the headquarters of Caimi Brevetti at Nova Milanese. Because the Open Lab that comes to life through these numbers has infinite potentialities.

Open Lab – entirely created by Caimi, from the idea to the project – becomes a hub of theoretical and applied research in the field of technology, acoustics, new materials and advanced prototyping, with the primary goal of supporting and expanding the company’s design horizons, with specialization in acoustic wellbeing. But the project, as its name says, is also open in other ways, namely to universities, research institutions and foundations, to develop studies, projects and solutions for the psychophysical wellness of people, in a wide range of fields of application.

Furthermore: the Open Lab project includes seminars and training courses, lectures and training camps, in Italy and abroad, aimed at architects, schools and universities, also in collaboration with associations of architects, engineers and surveyors.

The company – with a history of 70 years, now at its third generation, though its founder is still the president – has opened the way for a new concept of acoustic wellbeing, patenting the Snowsound sound-absorbing materials and technologies, which address a wide range of problems of noise pollution in spaces; technologies design masters like Michele De Lucchi and Alessandro Mendini have then interpreted in different creative forms, giving rise to collections that combine aesthetics, ergonomics and functional quality.

With Open Lab the prospects multiply and expand, and the research goes beyond design to cover all the fields of application of sound and acoustic wellness: music, medicine, science… An ongoing drive towards innovation to concretely improve the lives of people.

The seven laboratories of Open Lab

The heart of Open Lab is the Supernova Lab and the Rev Lab, two chambers closed inside a single block of special concrete resting on layers of special sand with different densities: the first is a completely insulated test chamber equipped with special electromagnetic screening at the Tempest level; the other is a reverberating chamber for the measurement and study of sound-absorbing materials, capable of carrying our 24 acoustic measurements simultaneously.
Around them, there are five other laboratories (Micromax Lab, Habitat Lab, Hub Lab, Design Lab, Ipogeo Lab) for the study of materials, real field analysis, central control and connection, development of models and prototypes, and stress testing of materials.
