“We want to think about the future, to find aware alternatives and to develop products that promote sustainability and wellbeing.” This is the mission leading to Cassina LAB, the collaboration between the Cassina Research and Development Center and Poli.design of the Milan Polytechnic.
From now on, the new products and revisions of existing ones will focus on three main factors: sustainability, research on new materials and wellbeing. “Today sustainability is a fundamental theme, for which we are working on innovation and the development of new solutions grafted onto what has always been the Cassina philosophy: the production of articles of high quality that last in time, with timeless design that in its own right lays the groundwork for sustainability,” says the CEO Luca Fuso.
This focus on the environment – through furniture that can be passed down from one generation to the next, not connected to passing fashions, never ‘disposable’ – is part of the brand’s DNA. The company aims to reduce environmental impact with a holistic approach: on the one hand, Poli.design has analyzed the products, materials, processes and technologies inside the company; on the other, Cassina has focused on how to improve logistics, distribution and all the phases of the chain of supply and production.
The second main factor is research on new, more sustainable materials, like the fiber obtained from plastic gathered from the oceans and recycled, used for the padding of the new collection, as in the Sengu Sofa by Patricia Urquiola, Duc-Duc by Mario Bellini and Mex-Hi by Piero Lissoni, and in the new editions of the LC2 and LC3 Fauteuil Grand Confort Durable by Le Corbusier, Pierre Jeanneret and Charlotte Perriand.

Finally, the third factor, wellbeing, is seen as personal wellness and habitat quality, generated by new approaches that focus on individual health and comfort, inserted in The Cassina Perspective at Night, the new range of offerings for the bedroom zone: the patented purifying fabric theBreath captures and breaks down particles of air pollution, favoring natural circulation of clean air, placed in the border of the Biombo bed by Patricia Urquiola and the headboard of the Acute bed by Rodolfo Dordoni, while the sound-absorbing panels applied to the Biombo headboard are made in Soundfil, a hygienic, breathing and non-toxic sound-absorbing thermal insulator that damps reverberation of certain sound frequencies.
