In one of Manhattan’s most impressive buildings, the New York City Public Library, the new edition of NYCxDESIGN is full of surprises. From this center, it expands out into the city. From Queens, on 14 May, with events at the Museum of the Moving Image, the Queens Public Library, Stickbulb at RUX Studios, all the way to Staten Island on 16 May in the new Empire Outlets created by SHoP Architects. 17 May is for Brooklyn, with workshops at the Brooklyn Museum, Brooklyn Navy Yard and Industry City, while in the Bronx 20 May is the date for a Ghetto Gastro at the New York Botanical Garden and the Bronx Museum. Finally, on 18 May Manhattan opens a series of events in strategic locations like the Hudson Yards, the Javits Center with ICFF and WantedDesign, and Times Square with its must-see Design Pavilion.

“New York City is an important center for creativity on a national and international level: in the city’s studios thousands of creative young people experiment and make innovation in every discipline, including product design, architecture, interior design, crafts, fashion, technology, even food,” says Edward Hogikyan, Vice-President and Executive Director of NYCxDESIGN.
During the design week, on 15 May the New York Public Library will open, for its 125th anniversary, the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Library (SNFL), a new facility designed by the architect Francine Houben of Mecanoo with Beyer Blinder Belle, with a rooftop event on 17 May.
“NYCxDESIGN offers a unique opportunity to peek behind the scenes: designers can share their work, opening to collaborations and interacting with the public,” says Adam I. Sandow, president and founder of SANDOW, which manages NYCxDESIGN. “We are enthusiastic about the fact that this year’s edition is working with such a varied range of institutions, involving all five boroughs, to create a conversation all over the city.”

For the first time, the event that transforms New York each year into a creative hub will stage an exhibition organized by Louise Harpmen – professor of architecture at NYU I Gallatin – of work by students from various schools in New York City, including Cooper Union, Parsons, Pratt Institute and City College. Other new developments include the collaboration between Herman Miller and the Museum of the Moving Image, with short films from the archives of the design brand, screened in coordination with the exhibition Envisioning 2001: A Space Odyssey by Stanley Kubrick.
The fifth edition of the Design Pavilion returns to lively Times Square, amidst interactive installations, lectures and performances, celebrating the future of design through the works of outstanding names and emerging talents. At the Cooper Hewitt Smithsonian Design Museum, the exhibition The New Garden focuses on the work of the French brothers Andre and Paul Vera, and their innovative ideas for the design of gardens at the start of the 20th century, while the exhibition on textile designer Susie Zuzek will reveal over 1500 designs for fabrics printed in Key West.
Presented by Design Pier, ‘The Chair’ at Usagi Gallery in Brooklyn is a unique collection by emerging American and international designers, while 1014 will make its debut with to modular seating made in Brooklyn, shown in the historic dwelling on the Upper East Side.
An absolute novelty, the NYCxDESIGN Magazine will make its debut in May to 2020: a new publication containing interviews, reflections and profiles of members of the New York City design community, the largest in the States.

From 17 to 20 May ICFF – International Contemporary Furniture Fair is back at the Javits Center in Manhattan, now at its 32nd edition. The major design platform in America presents 600 exhibitors from over 35 countries, welcoming 20,000 professionals with seminars and talks, as well as a section on schools in an interesting dialogue with the future of design.
WantedDesign Brooklyn
And while WantedDesign Brooklyn sheds light on its design experience at Industry City, the WantedDesign Manhattan platform, for its 10th edition, shifts inside the Javits Center, with a location designed by the architect Rodolfo Agrella. Launch Pads on new talents, a Look Book focusing on designers from North America, a series of conferences in collaboration with Design Milk and Clever, as communicated by the founders Odile Hainaut and Claire Pijoulat.
