From the project to the product, from large works of architecture to decorative details. All possible creativity is there behind the NYCxDesign Awards, the official honors assigned by the New York even to the international design community.
Now at their fourth edition and announced at the end of the event, the prizes are organized in collaboration with ICFF and Interior Design Magazine; over 700 guests gathered in the splendid setting of Pier17, at the Seaport District, to watch the ceremony in which the coveted Lladro Guest statuette was handed to the winners of the 77 categories.
Hotels, offices, apartments, showrooms, but also kitchens, seating, lighting, fabrics and everything the city offers in terms of architecture and interior design. The variety of the Awards is as impressive as the range of origins of the participating brands. “This year we saw over 800 products and projects from the city and the world – with submissions from 33 countries and four urban districts,” said editor in chief of Interior Design Cindy Allen, with the sole object “of honoring the inspirational works and fearless designers who make this great city the surprising location it is today.”
The Shed by Diller Scofidio + Renfro e Rockwell Group, winner of the category “Institutional” @ Iwan Baan
Almost inevitably, one award went to The Shed, by Diller Scofidio + Renfro and Rockwell Group, in the “Institutional” category, a work of architecture that has become the symbol of the regeneration of the Hudson riverfront. The list of winners also included the remarkable Times Square Edition Hotel by Yabu Pushelberg, the American Kennel Club Headquarters by Gensler in the “Creative Office” category, and the recent New York showroom of Fiandre created by GI Design Studio.
The podium for the 200 finalists of the “Product” awards was also impressively varied, where Made in Italy had a major role.
Laufen, Sonar Wave Bowl Double by Patricia Urquiola, winner of the category “Bath Fixtures”
Paola Lenti (through DDC) was a winner with the Mandala mobile partition in the “Accessories” category; Laufen was honored for Sonar Wave Bowl Double, the collection of washbasins in SaphirKeramik designed by Patricia Urquiola, in the “Bath Fixtures” segment; and the Spanish designer also received an award for Nuances, the collection of carpets for Gan, winning in the section on “Residential Flooring.”
In the area of coverings, the winners also included Ceramiche Piemme with the Shades collection of tiles by Gordon Guillaumier (“Best Hard Flooring Product”), Bolon with Diversity (“Contract Flooring”) and Salvatori with the Stone Tatami finish created by Piero Lissoni (“Tile + Stone Wallcovering: Designer Collaboration”), inspired by the facings of historic Japanese imperial palaces.
Lissoni was also the designer of Combine for Boffi, honored in the “Kitchen Cabinetry” category: a kitchen program featuring simple blocks that can be combined to create fixed or extensible lunch zones.
Minotti, Quadrado by Marcio Kogan, winner of the category “Outdoor Collection”
Of course there was also the segment of outdoor furniture, dominated – in the area of “Outdoor Collections” – by Minotti with Quadrado: Marcio Kogan (Studio mk27) was inspired in this project by Japanese Metabolist architecture of the 1950s and 1960s, leading to a detailed modular system of square suspended platforms that reprise the scheme of the teak gratings used on boats to facilitate water drainage. For the “Outdoor seating” category an award went to Gandia Blasco with Buit by Mayice Studio, modular seating conceived in woven aluminium mesh with special quilted fabric for outdoor use by Febrik Kvadrat.
IOC, Ghisolfa by Raffaella Mangiarotti, winner of the category “Contract Sofa”
Since the contract sector has become a true focal point for design, it comes as no surprise that Emeco, IOC and Moroso were among the winners for the categories “Contract Guest Seating,” “Sofas,” and “Bench + Stool,” respectively with the products On & On, Ghisolfa and Tape.

Finally, for the residential market, the outstanding firms receiving statues trophies were Janus et Cie with the Cone II table in the “Dining table” section, B&B Italia with the Eda-Mame settee, and Moooi with BFF, respectively in the categories “Residential Sofa” and “Residential Modular Sofa.”
