10 Corso Como delights New York

Devised by artist Kris Rhus and the visionary eye of Carla Sozzani, the 10 Corso Como concept store has opened its doors in New York. A haven of design, fashion, photography, Italian cuisine and sophisticated lifestyle, the space also boasts a gorgeous garden café

The slow shopping revolution continues. 10 Corso Como, Milan’s top concept store, has opened a stunning new space near the East River in Manhattan, occupying an entire floor of the historic Fulton Fish Market Building, which is one of the oldest markets in the USA and dates back to 1822. The store features carefully selected design and fashion pieces, an art and photography gallery, a bookstore and the 10 Corso Como Café and restaurant, with the vision of Carla Sozzani and unmistakeable influence of New York artist Kris Rhus on show in every detail.

10 Corso Como has gone from Milan, the first location for the store, to Seoul, Shanghai, Beijing and now Seaport District, the new cultural, gastronomic and shopping hub of Manhattan. As it joins the large-scale regeneration project underway in the neighbourhood, 10 Corso Como has decided to unveil several exclusive collaborations. The legendary Superga brand is coming to New York for the first time, with sneakers featuring the icon logo of Sozzani’s fashion house, while Prada also joins the party with some of its hottest looks from the Autumn 2018 ready-to-wear collection, including colourful tulle prints and the popular fluorescent nylon. Alaïa brings limited-edition archive pieces, a t-shirt and a shopping bag exclusively for the New York store. And Seletti unveils a US preview of its colourful and eccentric Blow collection, created in collaboration with Job Smeets and Nynke Tynagel from Studio Job.

This unconventional, eclectic collection reinvents day-to-day objects with pieces including an egg rug, hamburger chair, banana and cat lamps and neon lights – the line between art and design quickly blurs. Meanwhile, the Helmut Newton Private Property exhibition, 10 Corso Como New York’s inaugural show, organised by the Sozzani Foundation and the Helmut Newton Foundation, showcases the elegance, eroticism and decadent luxury of the master photographer, who loved to define himself as an “invader of privacy”. The exhibition features 45 vintage shots taken between 1972 and 1983, in which the more personal side of a host of celebrities is captured by Newton’s lens.

Iconic Italian design brand Flos and the ingenious creative Michael Anastassiades are behind the Arrangements light installation, created with luminous geometric elements which intersect and merge, creative scenic wings which seem to undulate in the space.

For lovers of gourmet cuisine, the 10 Corso Como Café showcases the best food from all Italian regions. Mediterranean flavours and seasonal menus deliver fresh interpretations on traditional cooking, while the Kris Rhus-designed interiors feature reflective surfaces and geometric patterning across tables, walls and flooring. The stunning, distinctive atmosphere continues in the 10 Corso Como New York Garden Café and Garden Bar, which offer a reworked take on the traditional courtyards of Milan. It’s the perfect place to sip on an authentic spritz or Bellini in New York’s newest green oasis.
