Face to face with the ocean

The Sanya EDITION resort project enters the Chinese island of Hainan on tiptoe, establishes itself in a respectful, restrained way and draws its guests into an intimate, symbiotic relationship with the water

The Sanya EDITION offers a new level of experience inspired by the sea. This unique hotel chain, created by Ian Schrager in partnership with Marriott International, is the Edition Hotels‘ first property in Asia, situated on Hainan island south of the Chinese coast.

The Sanya resort has always been defined as “the end of the sky and the ocean” and remains legendary thanks to its breath-taking landscapes, white sandy beaches, lush vegetation and year-round tropical climate. Indeed, it is water, the source of vitality and serenity, that defines the entire 194,000 sq m of the resort which overlooks the South China Sea, part of the Pacific Ocean, from Haitang Bay and boasts a spectacular private ocean: ‘only’ 20,000 sq m of ocean, 10 million gallons of sea water pumped into the hotel complex and recycled every 32 hours with a unique ozone treatment and filtering system that maintains the quality of the water, preventing the formation of algae.
The water forms a large salt water swimming pool (over 4000 sq m), highlighting the iridescence of glass mosaics, and flows onto the sandy ground with a gradient effect that gently enters the sea.

All around there are coconut palms, Beach Naupaka (Scaeveola) shrubs and rationalist architecture that offers a modern interpretation of the outdoor pavilions typical of Chinese gardens, with great emphasis on wood and the textures of the stone. The scenic project is a joint work by I.S.C Design Studio/CAP Atelier (Interior Design), SCDA (Architecture) and Madison Cox (Landscape Concept).
All the 512 guestrooms, which have a unique horseshoe shape, have ocean views, including the 56 suites and 16 exclusive villas nestled on a small plateau, each of which has a private pool and garden.

The project’s overall aesthetic lies in the balance of contrasts: traditional culture is united with contemporary culture, simplicity is combined with sophistication and modern design amplifies the natural beauty. “The Sanya EDITION was designed for modern China and for future China,” declares Schrager. “The mirror of a cosmopolitan country that is easily visible from all over the world.”
