Flexibility, aesthetics, well-being, safety. An array of buzz words at Light + Building 2018, for an impressively forward-thinking sector

We bring you a significant preview of the upcoming 2018 edition of Light + Building, with the results of the Design Plus powered by Light + Building 2018 competition. Out of a total of 222 entries from 154 companies, the jury has awarded 39 products, in virtue of their design content, environmental awareness and technological excellence, in the sectors of lighting, building automation, electric and electronic systems, highlighting fundamental themes and development lines. Miniaturisation, additional functions, automation and office safety, flexibility, as well as heightened performance and the potential of Led and Oled light sources, an increasingly innovative and high-performance field of research. Over the last few years, the introduction of these latest technologies has resulted in reduced and measured forms in systems and lighting bodies which are now digitalised and interconnected. Light has also acquired new properties and effects ­– colour, direction, reflection, to guarantee greater flexibility of use and Human Centricity, favouring naturalness and psycho-physical well-being for all kinds of inhabited interiors.

 

Product, system, service and application innovation, in the decorative, design and technical lighting sectors for indoor and outdoor use, for electric and electronic components, automation and safety for the home and architecture will all be presented at the biennial event at Frankfurt Messe, with the participation of approximately 1,650 manufacturers and brands from all over the world, including Artemide, Bega, Brand van Egmont, Davide Groppi, Delta Light, Erco, Fagerhult Group, Faustig, Flos, FontanaArte, iGuzzini, Ingo Maurer, LG, Linea Light Group, Louis Poulsen, Luceplan, Lumileds, Karman, Martinelli Luce, Nimbus, Nordeon Group, Occhio, Osram, Philips, Samsung, Schréder, Tobias Grau, Trilux, Vibia Lighting, Zero and Zumtobel.

 

Luminale, Biennale for lighting art and urban design, is also back at the same time, with 140 projects by international artists and designers, distributed throughout the urban fabric of Frankfurt and Offenbach, featuring creations grouped into five categories: Art, Community, Study, Solutions and Better City. With a programme which aspires to be more than just a showcase of installations or luminous experiments, the festival is an occasion for interdisciplinary reflection on the city and its possible future, confirming the fact that the vast lighting sector, with its numerous segments, is inextricably bound to all aspects of human project development capabilities.
